Anthony and I have always loved to travel. Pre-kids, that meant exploring far-flung places, planning big adventures, and immersing ourselves in new cultures (Paris! Kenya! Hawaii!) always with the next trip on the calendar.
Once we had kids, that kind of travel started to feel… less relaxing. Time changes, long flights, nap schedules, and cranky toddlers took the fun out of what was supposed to be a vacation. We found ourselves asking a different question: Where could we escape without flights, without stress, but still feel like a real getaway?
That’s when we started looking at Fire Island for families.
We had both been to Fire Island pre-kids and loved it -the excitement of the ferry ride, the slower pace, the beautiful beaches, and those stunning bay sunsets. So when our boys were 4 and 2.5, we decided to rent a family-friendly Fire Island house for a week to escape the brutal city heat and try something new.
We chose a rental in Ocean Bay Park, a quieter, family-oriented town with walkable restaurants and peaceful residential blocks. (Fire Island has many different towns, each with its own personality - a post for another time.)
Because the island is so narrow, nearly everywhere you stay is close to the water (bayside or oceanside) which made beach days walkable and manageable with young kids. And the fact that there are no cars on Fire Island is an absolute game changer for families.
We felt comfortable letting our kids run ahead, scooter freely, and explore in a way they simply don’t get to experience in the city. Every few blocks we passed kids selling painted shells or lemonade, and Anthony and I felt something we hadn’t expected on vacation: actual peace of mind.
We quickly fell into an easy rhythm - lazy mornings at the house, beach afternoons that stretched on without a plan, and simple joys that felt uniquely Fire Island. We took part in the most darling hermit crab races at Schooner’s Inn, where each participant chooses and names their own crab (and leaves with a goody bag). We lingered over meals at Maguire’s, which happens to sit right next to the playground -a true gift for parents. (Pro tip: request a table on the deck nearest the park so you can watch the kids play while you enjoy your cocktail.)
These are the kinds of details that make a Fire Island family vacation feel effortless - the rare kind where parents actually get to relax too. Fire Island has quietly been getting more attention as a great family-friendly destination, with outlets like MSN noting its rise as an easy, intentional beach escape for families.
One of the reasons Fire Island has remained a staple for our family is that it has grown with our kids. From toddlers to teenagers, each stage brought a different version of the same magic.
When our boys were little, Fire Island felt wonderfully manageable. The island’s walkability, lack of cars, and close proximity to both the ocean and the bay made daily outings simple and low-stress. Beach days didn’t require elaborate planning, and naps were easy to work around because everything was so close.
For parents wondering “Is Fire Island good for toddlers?” - in our experience, the answer was a confident yes.
As the boys grew, Fire Island became even more fun. We started inviting friends to join us, which meant built-in playmates and long, happy days on the beach. There’s nothing quite like sitting in a beach chair watching kids enjoy the surf and sand for hours without hearing “I’m bored” or requests for a screen.
One of our favorite annual adventures is walking to the Sunken Forest, a maritime holly forest protected as part of the U.S. National Park Service. It’s an easy, memorable excursion that feels both educational and magical.
During these years, we also learned that you don’t need to own a home on Fire Island to send kids to the local day camp, Ocean Beach Youth Group. Sending the boys there gave them a sense of independence, helped them make new friends, and gave us a few quiet hours to work or simply recharge -a win for everyone.
Now that our boys are teenagers, they experience Fire Island differently (and that might be the best part).
We share breakfast together at the house, and then they’re off: camp, sports camp, biking into Ocean Beach, stopping home to grab a snack or jump in the pool before heading back out. They have freedom, confidence, and fun - all within an environment that still feels safe and community-oriented.
What I love most is that they still want to come. Fire Island is their happy place too, and somehow that makes it even more special for us as parents.
For our family, Fire Island has been more than just a vacation spot - it’s been a place where life slows down and connection comes naturally. It’s where our kids learned independence in a safe, community-oriented environment, and where Anthony and I actually felt rested at the end of a week away.
If you’re looking for a family vacation that doesn’t require flights, elaborate planning, or constant entertaining, but still feels special, Fire Island delivers. It’s relaxed but vibrant, simple yet memorable, and uniquely suited to families who want both togetherness and ease.
Every family is different, but if your ideal trip includes walkable beach days, screen-free afternoons, and evenings that end with tired, happy kids, Fire Island may just become your family’s happy place too.
